ISO 286 tolerances

Type the diameter, pick the hole class and the shaft class: Toolhelix gives the deviations in micrometres, the limit sizes in millimetres and the maximum and minimum clearance, with the type of fit. For Ø20 H7/g6 the clearance runs from 7 to 41 µm.

Values to ISO 286, diameters up to 500 mm.

How to read a tolerance like H7

The letter tells where the tolerance zone sits relative to the nominal size, the number how wide it is. Capitals are for holes, lower case for shafts. H7 on 20 mm means the hole can go from 20.000 to 20.021 mm: with H the lower limit is always nominal.

Hole basis: why you almost always start from H

In the shop the hole is made with fixed-size tools (reamers, cutters, boring heads), while the shaft can be turned or ground to any size. So the hole stays at H and the shaft letter is chosen for the fit you want: f and g to run or slide, h to locate, k, m, n for transition fits, p and beyond for interference.

Clearance, transition, interference

If the smallest hole is still larger than the largest shaft, there is always clearance. If the smallest shaft is larger than the largest hole, there is always interference and assembly needs a press or heat. In between are transition fits: depending on the actual parts, a little clearance or a little interference.

Frequently asked questions

What does H7 mean?

A hole tolerance: lower limit equal to nominal, width equal to grade IT7. At 20 mm: 0 to +21 µm.

How much clearance does H7/g6 give at 20 mm?

7 to 41 µm: a precise clearance fit for spigots and guide pins.

What is the difference between H7/k6 and H7/p6?

H7/k6 is a transition fit, assembled with a mallet or light press; H7/p6 always has interference and needs a press or heat.

Up to what diameter does the calculator work?

Up to 500 mm, with the ISO 286 diameter ranges.
