Purity: clean carbide pays most, with no steel, welds or brazing. A drill with a steel shank is only worth its carbide part.
Sorting: inserts, solid tools and pieces kept apart get better terms than a mixed bucket.
Quantity: above a few dozen kilos the price per kg goes up.
Form: grinding sludge is worth much less than pieces, and is often paid only after analysis.
Market: the price follows tungsten, which has moved far more since 2025 than before.
How the weight is estimated
Tool carbide weighs about 14.5 g/cm³, almost twice as much as steel. A solid end mill is estimated as a full cylinder, minus about 10% for the flutes: a Ø10 × 72 mm end mill weighs about 74 g. An insert is estimated from its ISO code: shape, inscribed circle and thickness give the volume, minus the hole. A CNMG 120408 weighs about 10 g. These are estimates: the scale gives the real weight.

At a company, carbide scrap belongs to the company: it is sold through the company's procedures.
In October 2026 online buyers in Germany offer about 47–54 €/kg for clean inserts and solid carbide tools, for small lots. The price changes every month.
Why has the price of carbide risen so much?
Because of China's tungsten export restrictions since 2025, cuts to mining quotas and defence demand. In spring 2026 scrap went above 100 €/kg, then fell back. Our article explains it.
How much does a CNMG 120408 insert weigh?
About 10 grams: it takes around a hundred inserts to make a kilo.
Is grinding sludge worth anything?
Yes, but much less than pieces: the price depends on the carbide content and is often set after an analysis.
